Annie Advisor is a textbook example of social impact

Sometimes a single message can change the rest of your life. Annie Advisor is a Finnish social innovation that is remarkably effective at preventing students from dropping out.

The idea behind Annie Advisor is simple: it’s much easier to admit you need help when a student receives a message through a familiar channel—especially when the message is worded in a way that makes it easy to reply.

Founded in 2020, Annie Advisor has already reached more than 140,000 students, each of whom has been asked at least once: “Do you need help?”

– Asking for help is surprisingly difficult. Only one-fifth of students who need support bring it up on their own with their school. Many don’t seek help, for example, because they think someone else needs it more, says Miska Noponen, CEO of Annie Advisor.

The dropout rate fell by 27% even during the pilot program

Annie Advisor was born at a hackathon where many of Annie's founders were involved in brainstorming solutions to prevent students from dropping out.

– That’s when the idea clicked: how about setting the data and predictive models aside for a moment and simply asking students how they were doing? Based on their answers, the students could then be guided to the support available to them, Noponen recalls.

The Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities was enthusiastic about the idea and began piloting it in collaboration with the City of Vantaa.

Annie Advisor proved its worth right from the start. During the pilot phase carried out in 2021, the dropout rate at Varia Vocational College in Vantaa fell by 27%. That same year, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the national average dropout rate rose by about 4%.

Annie Advisor now has plenty of similar success stories. Salpaus Further Education, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, the Finnish Deaconess Institute, the University of Vaasa, the Ylä-Savo Education Consortium, and dozens of others are using Annie Advisor’s services. The use of the Annie bot has reduced dropout rates at partner institutions by up to 25%.

65% of students respond when they receive a message from Annie-bot

The Annie support bot is designed specifically for the needs of vocational schools, universities of applied sciences, and universities. It checks in on students via WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, or traditional text message, using a message tailored to the situation. For example:

Hi! I'm Annie, the student support bot. 🤖 I hope you’re doing well. You’ve had quite a few absences recently. Is there anything I can do to help, or is everything OK? Choose A, B, C, or D—or respond in your own words.

A. I need help with my studies.

B. I need help with my health or well-being.

C. I need help with something else.

D. Everything's OK, or I'm already getting help.

Reply, even if you don't need help right now 👌🏻

On average, 65% of students respond when they receive a message from Annie-bot. That’s an impressive figure—especially when compared to email surveys, to which typically only about 5% of students respond.

Even a small team can make a big difference

Noponen says that many customers are surprised when they meet Annie Advisor's experts for the first time.

– One customer put it well: what on earth, I was expecting a group of code wizards, Noponen laughs.

At Annie, product development is led by a doctor of educational psychology, Noponen, who has built his career in learning analytics, has a background in both education and computer science, and a social psychologist works at the customer interface.

– Our marketing is led by an economist who shares our values but has a completely different set of tools, Noponen mentions.

– We are a textbook example of how even a small team, with the right solutions and the right partners, can do something that has significant societal impact.

Depending on how you count, Annie Advisor employs 6–9 people. They are all united by one thing: they know what it is like when you or someone close to you needs support to complete their studies.

– Some of us received help at a critical moment, while others did not. I myself belong to the latter group, Noponen says.

Noponen has one and a half degrees: he completed one with distinction, but the other remained unfinished, even though his grade average and study performance were good.

– Combining work and studies felt overwhelming at a difficult stage of life. I did not seek help; I simply stopped. I did not receive a single message from my school. Luckily, I already had one degree and different career paths available. Still, I believe I would have two degrees today if someone had asked whether I needed help, Noponen says.

The Solutions Fund Effekt's support helps expand our impact

Annie Advisor has gained recognition in Finland and internationally. For example, it was chosen as the audience favourite in Kasvu Open 2023 and received an honourable mention. That same year, Annie was also selected for the respected HundrED Global Collection of education innovations. Most recently, in June 2026, Annie received a runner-up placement in the NN Social Innovation Startup Competition in Amsterdam.

For a startup, the most important recognitions have been those that have also brought substantial funding.

– There have been three critical moments on Annie Advisor’s journey. If they had not gone well, our story would have ended there. The first was in 2021, when the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities decided to pilot the Annie bot together with the City of Vantaa and also funded product development. Thanks to that, we dared to found Annie Advisor, Noponen recalls.

The second milestone was the Tools Competition funding received in the EdTech competition in July 2024.

– The funders behind the prize include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. With the funding, we developed Annie’s AI features and created an even smarter bot.

The third milestone was the impact funding granted by Effekt in May 2026.

“It felt surreal and we were so grateful when we heard about Effekt’s funding decision,” Noponen says.

– With Effekt, we have a strong sense that we have allies with us on our journey. It is truly clear that we are on the same side of the table and pursuing the same impact: fewer student dropouts.

Until now, Annie Advisor has supported current degree students—that is, those who are currently enrolled in a degree program. With support from Effect, its impact will be expanded.

– The funding for Effekt enables us to develop Annie in a way that allows us to help students both just before they start their studies and immediately afterward. For many, these are pivotal moments in life when even a single message can change everything, Noponen emphasizes.

Annie Advisor has ambitious goals for the future:

– We want to prevent 100,000 students from dropping out by 2030. That means the Annie bot would need to guide about two million students in need of help into the support system. That’s a huge leap—ten times more than so far. However, the goal is surprisingly realistic when you break it down into smaller parts.
